The Australian eSafety Commission has sent letters to GitHub and some other platforms, querying the code-sharing platform whether or not it should be considered a social networking platform.
What or Who is GitHub?
GitHub is a proprietary developer platform that allows developers to create, store, manage, and share their code. It uses Git to provide distributed version control and GitHub itself provides access control, bug tracking, software feature requests, task management, continuous integration, and wikis for every project.
GitHub in itself is not a social networking platform but it allows other users to comment and developers can be very unfriendly to one another. Images, videos and other multimedia can be hosted on the platform. GitHub Pages can be used to host websites with content unsuitable for children, although it was initially meant to help developers and institutions.
